The first monograph of Luke Smalley was issued in 2002 and the photographer left us waiting in black and white for almost six years. The long wait ended early this year, with the presentation of his second book, full of color images this time, at the Wessel + O’Connor Fine Art Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.
Don’t let the title fool you, “Exercise at Home” is the exact opposite of Jane Fonda doing sit-ups in her living room (ask your mother if the name doesn’t ring any bell). It’s all about youth, genuine athleticism and art.
Smalley shot all the portraits in his home state of Pennsylvania. Dylon, Alexander, Caleb, Sascha and Nigel engage in strange competitions reinvented by the photographer, who also designed and crafted some of the outfits and equipments.
Sweet and strange.

Gymnasium, the first monograph (in b&w), is still my favorite though. I admire the way he creates and assembles those shots, however painstaking his creative process seems to be.
