The I of WhenIsee

Jean-Marc started picturing the male 15 years ago in Paris. He worked with agencies, shooting aspiring models, all the while developing a more personal approach he somehow formalized in whenIsee men, a book he published in 2002, featuring 96 of his best male pictures.

Most of his models are first-timers. Jean-Marc does not easily, if at all, compromise on the freshness and openness of the guys he portrays. He also prefers natural settings, avoids makeup and ditched artificial lighting long ago. “Lack of warmth and emotion in photo studios have not allowed me to produce work of any real interest ,” he explains. Seeking emotional contrast, Jean-Marc usually selects surroundings he feels are at odds with the model.

Under the pseudonym Aymeric J. Parcehn — we will have to ask him how he cooked that one up — he photographs landscapes and basically everything non-homoerotic, though seduction is obviously still a big part of the equation.

Later this year, Jean-Marc will publish volume III of his concept series whenIsee light: one model, one place, one shooting session.

The photos we are previewing today in the gallery are excerpted from a yet untitled book to be published in October. Jean-Marc aims to move his viewers. He obviously succeeded with us at Charmants.com. Beauty is all around, elegance is pervasive and the essential touch of sadness is here. And there.
