Asafa Powell is Beijing-Ready
Jamaican Asafa Powell–200lb, 6’33”–won the 100m final at the London grand prix last Friday night in 9.94 seconds. It is another important victory for Powell, who beat fellow Jamaican and world record holder Usain Bolt in the battle of the world’s fastest men last week in Stockholm. American world champion Tyson Gay had to withdraw because of a hamstring injury.

Bolt has yet to commit to running the 100m, but Powell is confident the three contenders will compete again in Beijing. “I’m ready,” he said.

The Commonwealth champion lost his world record title–9.74 seconds–to Bolt, who improved it when he ran 9.72 sec last June in New York. “It’s a great weight off my shoulders,” Powell said, with a slight hint of resentment. “I am happier being the underdog.”

But the pressure is still very much on him. After making fifth in Athens (2004) because he was probably too young and third at the 2007 Osaka world championships because he still lacked experience, the 25-year-old is now in his prime and definitely expected to shine in Beijing.
