Ten years ago, John Boorman decided he would eventually bring to the screen Marguerite Yourcenar’s 1951 novel, Memoirs of Hadrian. The British director of Deliverance, Point Blank and Excalibur recently announced that production had started. The filming of this intimate biopic about Roman emperor Hadrian (117-138 A.D.) is scheduled for Morocco, Rome and Spain in the spring.
Daniel Craig signed on to portray Hadrian, who had an affair–while married–with a teenage Bithynian boy named Antinous. The Antonio Banderas rumor is now officially squelched. And Queer as Folk UK Charlie Hunnam will play gay again the young lover.
Head on to the gallery for a Charlie Hunnam galore.
[Ed. note, August 2, 2008: An alert reader pointed out in the comments below that our initial post incorrectly qualified Antinous as the alleged lover of Hadrian. Their relationship is indeed well documented. We stand corrected.]

Hadrian York
Hadrian’s relationship with Antinous was one if not the most important and well documented relationships in all of the ancient world. It is far beyond an alleged affair. After Antinous’ death (spoiler?) Hadrian deified him, founded several cities in his name, and had thousands upon thousands of sculptures of him spread across the Roman empire. Btw, the current blockbuster exhibit at the British Museum is on Hadrian — http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/all_current_exhibitions/hadrian.aspx. It’s gotten great reviews.

The Advocate only says that Daniel Craig signed on. And it seems that he already denied it, but I can’t find the link.
