Mission accomplished! The French finally got their first Olympic gold medal in Beijing – and their first wrestling gold in 84 years! Charmants.com’s favorite Steeve Guénot defeated Kanatbek Begaliev in the Greco-Roman 66-kilogram weight class event.
“I don’t realize what’s happening. It’s the first gold for France in Beijing and I’m very proud. It’s a crazy stuff,” he said while celebrating his victory at The China Agricultural University Gymnasium – the venue holding wrestling competitions in the 29th Olympiad. “My parents and my younger brother and a lot of my pals are here. It’s the best day of my life, it’s the best present I could give them.”
His father (a wrestling referee), his mother (a wrestling club manager), his 18-year-old brother (a wrestler too) and his friends came all the way from Chalon-sur-Saône, France, to support him and his 29-year-old brother Christophe, who won bronze in the 74kg class a moment later.
More about that tomorrow!
