Christophe and Steeve (not Steve) Guénot Triumph in Beijing

We are quite sure it didn’t escape your attention that French brothers Christophe and Steeve — not Steve — Guénot won gold and bronze yesterday in Beijing, giving France their biggest success in Olympic greco-roman wrestling since 1924.

Minutes after 22-year-old Steeve won a gold medal in the 66 kg class, 29-year-old Christophe defeated Peter Bacsi of Hungary, in a tough repechage bronze bout that spilled out of bounds several times.

After receiving his medal, Christophe looked back on the crazy Olympic day of the Guénot brothers: “My brother frazzled me (laughs). I was on edge all day, waiting for the repechage and encouraging him at the same time. When he won gold, that really boosted me up. It was heartwarming to see him win. I told myself I had to win too — I’m his big brother, right?”

Christophe then went into further details about his relationship with Steeve: “Me and my brother, we’re always together, we train together. I can really improve with him because, as you’ve seen, he’s not that bad. We share everything, attending wrestling camps, running, losing weight, the hours in the sauna. We motivate each other, it’s a great strength. But I must deal with all his paperwork. The guy needs constant care, I look after him. (laughs)

The Guénot brothers got a big celebrity upgrade yesterday, and their good looks make them great picks for the marketing specialists. Their popularity in the corridors of the Parisian metro – where they both work as security officers — is also expected to soar. But you will have to wait a little while before you can tug at their uniform and hope for a full-body search.

“We have to go back to work in the beginning of September, but we will take a few days off and go somewhere together. We need to unwind. All of this is new to us, it’s not easy. We’re not used to the interviews, the cameras, all the people around us, coming all the way from France to support us,” confided Christophe.
