The balmy Californian weather is certainly involved to some extent in the ongoing exhibitionism of Silas Botwin (Hunter Parrish) in the fourth season of Showtime’s Weeds. The eldest Botwin son began showing his nicely sculpted upper body in episode 2, and went on with a fully naked — but fleeting — scene in episode 7. Weeds writer Jenji Kohan and director Craig Zisk had to up the ante in the season’s finale. This last episode, titled ‘If You Work for a Living, Why Do You Kill Yourself Working?’ most notably features Nancy being captured by the DEA, and Silas’ scarcely concealed frontal nudity. The great physique of Hunter did not escape the attention of the producers of Spring Awakening, the Tony Award-winning Broadway rock musical. They hired the Texan actor last August, for the role of rebellious schoolboy Melchior Gabor, in this adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s classic German drama about sexually repressed teens. His naked sex scene on stage is definitely one of the most talked about. When asked how it compared to his TV scenes, Hunter admitted in a recent interview: “Doing it on stage is way scarier. Luckily, the scene is between me and one other person and I don’t remember that the audience is there because I’m looking into her eyes the whole time. It’s a very, very, special scene and it’s very tasteful so I didn’t even think twice about it. But the first time I did it, I was like, ‘Uh oh, there’s a lot of people… staring at my butt.’”
The 21-year-old is also a surprisingly good singer. He began singing in church as a boy, and is now working on his debut album, which he describes as fitting into the “rock-acoustic-chill-coffeehouse” genre.
And for the anecdote, Hunter Parrish might have landed Zach Efron’s role in the High School Musical franchise, but he skipped his final audition to do a movie instead. “I would have a very different career right now, and I’m happy where I’m at,” he said.
