Looks like French rugby clubs will stop at nothing to get us interested in the Top 14. Sonny Bill Williams joined Toulon last month, Frédéric Michalak is returning to Toulouse, and New Zealand’s star fly-half Dan Carter just flown into Perpignan.
Dan Carter, considered by many to be the leading player in the world, will be available for his new club after New Zealand’s November tour of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. But he will visit Perpignan until tomorrow to deal with administrative issues and get acquainted with his new environment. On Monday, he met with a welcoming committee of over 3000 supporters of the Catalan club at the Stade Aimé Giral. The All Black number 10 didn’t have to flash his Jockey underwear to please the crowd — he’s been under contract with the brand since 2003. His simple demeanor, cute boyish face and unbreakable smile were enough to wow everybody.
But the 26-year-old knows it will take way more to wow the club managers the money guys. With a package worth over one million US dollars for six months of work, they certainly want to see a return on their investment, all the more so given that it’s been 53 years since Perpignan won the coveted trophy of the French rugby championship: the Brennus Shield.
