Is this how the gods of antiquity would look today? The excavated Greek Kouros statues and the bronzes of Pagan temples that returned in the Renaissance inspired Michelangelo, Donatello, then the painters of the 19th century, and many of today’s masters of homoerotic photography. But David Vance is probably the current best expert at expressing such timeless beauty, with the kind of precision you usually encounter in classic painting and sculpture.
The Miami-based photographer — of Italian descent — produced an impressive array of portraits of celebrities and sports figures for prestigious magazines like Cosmopolitan and Rolling Stones, luxury brands like Rolex and movie studios.
In David Vance’s world, the celebrities belong in the ‘Mortals’ category. And the models featured in Timeless? Well, they belong in David’s ‘Gods’ category. It may sound simplistic, but we have to admit that it makes perfect sense when you consider what separates the guy above from, say, Ricky Martin.
This trade paperback edition of Timeless (96 pages, duo-tone) is now available in Europe and will be released in the USA in December 2008.
