Rome is host to the Diving World Championships until July 25. On saturday at the synchronized 3-meter springboard diving final, Charmants.com favorite Alexandre Despatie of Canada [left] and compadre Reuben Ross [right] took bronze. US Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen won silver, and Chinese Qin Kai and Wang Feng retained their title at the top spot.

16-year-old Kristian Ipsen [left] had never been to a World Championships before. Neither had 15-year-old Brit Tom Daley [right] who ended up 5th in the preliminaries of the 10-meter platform. “It was a steady performance,” he said. “I’m glad I’ve got it out of the way. I’ve been waiting for a long time to do this World Championship. We have been out here for a long time so it’s good to get out and compete. It wasn’t anything special but I’m saving that for tomorrow.”

Also saving for tomorrow was Australia’s Beijing Olympic gold medallist Matthew Mitcham [above], who only took bronze in the one-metre springboard, an event he is still developing in: “I am really happy with my progress in springboard. I am trying to work hard and get it to the level of my platform event,” he explained.
