Brian J. Smith is the major asset of the new Stargate spinoff, Stargate Universe a k a SGU, that premiered on Syfy earlier this month. The 27-year-old american actor is portraying a newbie officer forced into a leadership role when survivors from a space base jump through a stargate and onto a mysterious ship far from Earth.

So far, his credits consist mostly of theater roles, a guest spot on Law & Order, and indie films such as Hate Crime (2005) in which he played a gay guy facing intolerance from the son of a fundamentalist preacher.

SGU actually opened with a (straight) sex scene involving Smith, but it was all too brief. We’ll keep you posted however — major shirtless scenes are just around the bend, wethink.
